On Sunday, August 1, Miss America Organization Board Chairman, Sam Haskell, III will appear on an episode of Iron Chef on the Food Network at 10 p.m. ET/9 p.m. CT*. Sam will serve on the panel of judges as Seattle chef, Maria Hines, battles Iron Chef Mashuru Morimoto.

Sarah Saldana was crowned Miss Alamogordo's Outstanding Teen

Sarah Saldana, center, receives her Miss Alamogordo's Outstanding Teen Crown from Allexandra Brady and Sarah Richardson during Saturday night's Sertoma Scholarship Pageant at the Flickinger Center for Performing Arts.

Saldana is the first recipient of the title and will compete for the Miss New Mexico's Outstanding Teen crown next year. Adrienne Jaramillo was the teen pageant's first runner-up.

Sarina Turnbull and Stacey Ware were also crowned as Miss Alamogordo and Miss Otero County, respectively, replacing 2009 titleholders Brady and Richardson. With their wins, Turnbull and Ware will now compete in next year's Miss New Mexico Pageant with a chance to compete at Miss America in Las Vegas, Nev.

Courtney Messer was Miss Alamogordo/Miss Otero County's first runner-up, while Shawnee Hoyt finished as the second runner-up.

Miss Rwanda makes it to top 10

Photo courtesy of Navarro College Hadidja Uwimana will compete this weekend in the Miss Africa USA beauty pageant in Washington D.C. The native of Rwanda, Uwimana was orphaned at five by that country's genocide. She's currently a sophomore at Navarro College.

Corsicana — Hadidja Uwimana, 21, called “Kay” by her Navarro College friends, made it to the top 10 finalists before being overcome in the Miss Africa USA competition this past weekend. Fifi Souma, Miss Republic of Guinea Conakry, won the top title.

The Navarro College sophomore competed in Maryland for the title in a beauty contest specifically for immigrants from Africa. Most competitors are college students.

Uwimana’s parents were killed in the Rwandan genocide in 1994, and she moved to the U.S. with her aunt after years of living alone, and then ending up in an orphanage.

Even though she didn’t win first, Uwimana still had a wonderful time, she said Monday.

“It was a fun experience,” she said. “It was scary. I had to figure out how to get to a hotel, to travel. I learned something.”

On Friday, she gave a speech about her background and her desire to raise money for orphanages in Rwanda.

“It was interesting to hear the other girls, the love they have for Africa in general,” Uwimana said. “People who came to watch, people who came to listen to the speeches said it was very emotional.”

Many people approached her with offers to help set up Web sites, or help with a profile or fundraising, moved by her story.

“I made friends with almost everybody,” Uwimana said.

Kelsey Bowman will represent West Virginia in the Miss Black USA pageant in Washington, D.C., Aug. 4-10. The pageant will be televised on the BET network.

This year’s Dallas pageant crowned Sarah Boehner, 22-year-old, as Miss Dallas 2010 and Haley Spathias, 17-year-old, as Miss Dallas Teen 2010 on Sunday, May 23, 2010.

Sarah graduate from Baylor University with a degree in public relations and speech communications. She will compete for Miss Texas USA 2011.

Haley is a junior, honor roll student, and cheerleader at Arlington Heights High School and plans to attend Texas Christian University majoring in Journalism. She will compete for Miss Texas Teen USA 2011
